Tarago Reservoir Outlet Tower

Our client required a safe access system in order to complete routine maintenance and ad-hoc repairs to an outlet valve at their service reservoir. As there was no existing means for access we were tasked with the design, engineering and fabrication of the working platform and ingress walkways. The access system was then to be installed without compromising the integrity of the outlet structure or weir walls.

Project Highlights

  • Engineering and designing a system that had stakeholder buy-in allowing it to be functional and meet’s client needs.

  • Exceptional Project Management that minimised high risk activities resulting in delivering an outcome with zero incidents.

  • Knowledge that the system provided will enable workers to leave the site at the end of the day in the same way they started the day.

Services Provided

  • Design a new access structure for Valve K and identification of design issues and incorrect measurements in the drawings, requesting necessary modifications.

  • Accurate site measurements and assistance in refining the design to meet our client’s operational needs.

  • Management of a crane sub-contractor to transport materials over a 15m distance and assist in the install.

  • Fabrication of platforms, walkways and safety rails in accordance with Australian Standards.

  • Delivering of the project to an exceptional standard, with careful attention to safety, structural integrity, and the operational needs of the valve maintenance team.

  • Final Inspection and handover ensuring that the access structure was fully functional, meeting all safety and operational requirements.

Services Provided

  • Assessment of the condition of the deteriorated carpark and surrounding areas.

  • Collaboration with our client to develop a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for the rectification works, providing expert advice and recommendations on the best approach to address the issues within budget and time constraints.

  • Implementation of safety measures by cordoning off the affected areas to prevent public access during the works.

  • Carrying out the necessary resurfacing and repairs to the carpark and other high-traffic areas, ensuring a safe and functional environment for the public until the larger capital project is completed.

Challenges

  • The access system had to be designed to align with the curvature of the walls and outlet building whilst being robust enough to withstand the pressure from the water released from the valve

  • The installation required a 20m crane lift made all the more difficult by an electrical sub-station and overhead cables in the vicinity

Outcome

After a number of design and engineering changes we were able to collaborate with all stake holders to provide a system that drastically reduced risk and improved safety for future works on the valve. The structure was built to stringent standards, and surpassed all magnetic and particle testing, resulting in a robust and sturdy system that surpasses the customer’s initial requirements.
