High Risk Pump Station
The site required roof access for plant and equipment via cranage. Our team were tasked with the fabrication and installation of a removable roof access hatch that was waterproof. It was critical that we maintained the structural integrity of the roof and provided safe access to our client’s staff.
Project Highlights
-
Worked closely with our client to find the best solutions for rescue operations and safety on-site.
-
Overcame initial fabrication challenges by adjusting welds and improving the hatch design.
-
Collaboratively worked with a number of contractors and were able to incorporate multiple safety processes into one system to safely deliver the project.
Services Provided
-
Install scaffold and access ladder to safely reach the roof for hatch and handrail installation
-
Fabrication of roof hatch in the factory
-
Conduct Weld testing and reporting.
-
Adjustment of connection points to align holes for proper fitting
-
Construction and installation of handrails and walkways around the hatch area to prevent falls, ensuring all walkways are safe and meet requirements
-
Installation of removable flashings over the hatch fixings to prevent water infiltration and protect the building from leaks.
Services Provided
-
Assessment of the condition of the deteriorated carpark and surrounding areas.
-
Collaboration with our client to develop a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for the rectification works, providing expert advice and recommendations on the best approach to address the issues within budget and time constraints.
-
Implementation of safety measures by cordoning off the affected areas to prevent public access during the works.
-
Carrying out the necessary resurfacing and repairs to the carpark and other high-traffic areas, ensuring a safe and functional environment for the public until the larger capital project is completed.
Challenges
-
The tight staircase and limited access to the roof made it challenging to move equipment and materials up to the working area.
-
The initial hatch design had connection issues, requiring alterations to the welds and fabrication process to ensure proper fitting and structural integrity.
-
Managing materials for the handrailing, walkway, and roof hatch fabrication while ensuring no public access required careful coordination with external companies.
Outcome
The project was successfully delivered in two phases, ensuring safe access to the roof, installation of the hatch, and implementation of walkways and handrails. The crane was required for an extended period due to safety concerns, but with the collaboration of the safety team we managed to address risks effectively. The project enabled the client to lower the internal crane for servicing, supporting future operational needs. The client provided positive feedback on the quality of the work and the outcome.
