Surrey Hill Valve Pit

The existing valve pit was deemed a confined space entry zone. Our client wanted to convert the to a restricted entry and construct a building over the top of the pit after removing the concrete lid that covers the existing pit. Our client also wanted to create a safer access situation into the pit by constructing a new ladder access platform.

Project Highlights

  • Safer work environment for operational team to deliver scopes

  • Site design engineering

  • Team dynamics

  • Client satisfaction with outcomes

Services Provided

  • Designed services to remove structural components of the valve pit

  • Planning with clients’ operational team whilst managing live assets and potential outcomes and interruptions

  • Demolition of roof structure without compromising the structural integrity of the asset

  • Confined space processes and protocols

  • Bespoke design and fabrication for new access platforms and ladders for a safer ingress and egress

  • Construction of new building above pit, meeting all design and legal requirements to codes

Services Provided

  • Assessment of the condition of the deteriorated carpark and surrounding areas.

  • Collaboration with our client to develop a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for the rectification works, providing expert advice and recommendations on the best approach to address the issues within budget and time constraints.

  • Implementation of safety measures by cordoning off the affected areas to prevent public access during the works.

  • Carrying out the necessary resurfacing and repairs to the carpark and other high-traffic areas, ensuring a safe and functional environment for the public until the larger capital project is completed.

Challenges

  • Confined space entry and ventilation.

  • Site access and lid removal.

  • Working above live water mains and valves.

  • Maintaining structural integrity of existing pit whilst completing works

  • Site access along embankment, trees supporting embankment

  • Tight narrow roads.

Outcome

This project involved removing the concrete lid of an existing valve pit without disrupting the water supply. We installed a custom access platform and ladder for safe valve access and constructed a new building on top, providing a secure entry for future access. The solution enhanced safety, accessibility, and operational efficiency while maintaining the integrity of the original structure.
