Sewer Pump Replacements

The client required the replacement of 2 existing pumps in a sanitary pit to be replaced with 2 new pumps with in-built macerators. This required the installation of 2 new guide rail systems for the pumps, NDT testing and re-coating of the existing pipe work in the sanitary pit, removal of the existing internal macerators and reconfiguration of pipework and replacement of the existing concrete pit lids that had previously been damaged.

Project Highlights

  • Managing a high risk project without incident and able to adapt to changing conditions throughout.

  • Installing and positioning the pumps that were larger than the existing pumps in an area that provided minimal room for installation.

  • Being able to assess and implement strategies throughout the project as unknown variables were identified.

Services Provided

  • PMPs, ITPs and HSEQ Plans including those for high risk works and lifting plans.

  • Confined Space Entry works for the removal and installation of the pumps.

  • Crane lifts for the removal and installation of the pumps.

  • Fabrication of the Guide Rail Systems.

  • NDT Testing to assess the internal condition of the pipework and provision of reports.

  • Re-coating of existing pipework to prevent corrosion of infrastructure.

  • Refurbishment of damaged concrete pit lids.

  • Design, fabrication and installation of ladder staunch extensions.

Services Provided

  • Assessment of the condition of the deteriorated carpark and surrounding areas.

  • Collaboration with our client to develop a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for the rectification works, providing expert advice and recommendations on the best approach to address the issues within budget and time constraints.

  • Implementation of safety measures by cordoning off the affected areas to prevent public access during the works.

  • Carrying out the necessary resurfacing and repairs to the carpark and other high-traffic areas, ensuring a safe and functional environment for the public until the larger capital project is completed.

Challenges

  • Working in a Confined Space where we were unable to completely isolate the incoming sewer line - a flow through plug was used to provide a safe working environment.

  • New pumps were larger than the existing pumps which required the re-alignment of guide rails and fabrication of footings in order to locate the pumps into a working position.

  • Damaged concrete lids were no longer able to be produced to match the dimensions. This required us to refurbish the existing concrete in-fill without damaging the cast iron framework.

  • Dealing with torrential down-pours throughout the works increasing the risks of CSE tasks.

Outcome

On what was a challenging project, we were able to deliver an outcome that matched our customer’s high expectations. We were able to successfully install the new pumps and work with ageing infrastructure to ensure that the pumps were able to perform as required.
